10 Ways Financial Planning Will Change Your Life

  1. Focus

Through planning, you will finally have the “real” money talk.  Your job, your spending, your lifestyle will go under the microscope, showing you what areas need more focus and attention to accomplish your dreams.

  2. Clarity

Putting your goals down on paper to determine what’s really important to you will open your eyes to how you spend money and what needs to change.

  3. Reality

When you go through the process, reality is sure to set in. You might see some very big numbers of what your future will cost. Some people see this as a negative.  They will go and put their head back in the sand and never accomplish their goals.  You will be different.  Living in reality is very important to your future success.

  4. Relief

It’s stressful not knowing if you are financially okay. Planning will give you the real skinny about your current situation. Are you on track or do you need to make a change?  The earlier you find out, the more relief it will provide.

  5. Motivational

Some people hate to be told “you can’t”. If that’s you, once you see how much money you need to reach financial independence or buy a home, or send your kids to college you should be so motivated to do whatever it takes to find the extra money.  Maybe you will demand a raise or even get a 2nd job.  Whatever it takes!

  6. Organizational

A major benefit of going through the process is that you will be forced to put your financial house in order. So many people overlook their interest rates, their portfolios, how they are spending their extra money and so much more.  A properly done financial plan brings all of those things to the table.  Getting organized is tremendously valuable.

  7. Freedom

…..To say NO that is. Financial planning helps you prioritize your spending and gives you the freedom to turn things down that cost money without feeling guilty. Saving for your future will become a higher priority than going out for dinner…again.

  8. Purpose

Having a lot of money is great. But you can’t eat money, wear money, or sleep in money.  Earning that paycheck just to have more money loses its luster as you get older.  Financial planning gives your paycheck a higher purpose- Your goals, Your dreams.

  9. Humbling

Sometimes we all need to be humbled a bit.  When you build a financial plan and you finally see the numbers, you might realize for the first time that you are behind. The BWM or Mercedes in the driveway might not make sense anymore or it might make you think twice about being jealous of a neighbor.  They might be further behind than you.

  10. Empowering

Financial planning is connected to every major decision in your life.  Spending money on certain things is a choice, just like choosing to save for your kid’s college education. Before you have a plan, you spend money without being aware of the consequences. But, once you have the numbers, you should feel different when spending. You will know what you need to accomplish your goals, so if you have extra money on top of that, you should feel empowered to treat yourself or your family.  And believe me, that feels great.

Still don’t believe?

Well, let’s flip the switch- based on what you are currently doing to accomplish your goals,  are you confident you are on track?

At minimum, financial planning will at least do that.  Consider everything else above a bonus!
